(Week Commencing 18th February 2019)

In Derwent this week we are learning the following:

English:

In reading this week we are starting to explore chapter 5 of The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark. We will also be writing a narrative based on the story Owl Babies.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are looking at new spelling rules (see bloomz and planners for the spellings). We will also practise these using our no-nonsense spelling strategies.

Maths:

In maths we are looking at our maths basics.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘who could survive in a Habitat like that?’ We will be looking at food chains and the importance of a balanced diet.

In Derwent this week we are learning the following:

English:

In reading this week we are starting to explore chapter 3 of The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark. We will also be researching different types of Owls ready to write a non-chronological report on them.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are looking at new spelling rules (see bloomz and planners for the spellings). We will also practise these using our no-nonsense spelling strategies.

Maths:

In maths we are looking at length, measure and perimeter.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘who could survive in a Habitat like that?’ We will be looking at micro and local Habitats.

In Derwent this week we are learning the following:

English:

In reading this week we are starting to explore chapter 2 of ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark.’ We will write, publish and edit or letters to Chrissy and Annie from the Bog Baby.

Maths:

In maths we are looking at division.  We will also be focusing on the four daily operations and maths facts.

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘who could survive in a Habitat like that?’ We will be looking at micro and local Habitats.

Happy New Year!

In Derwent this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we are starting with the book called ‘The Bog Baby’ which is great for descriptive language and looking at morals. We will also look at setting a New Year Resolution and have a discussion based on this.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are looking at prefixes and suffixes and introducing new spelling rules for this cycle. (Each year group will have their own spellings in their planners and they are on bloomz too).

Maths:

In maths we are looking at multiplication and division..

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘who could survive in a Habitat like that?’ We will start by looking at things that are alive, dead or that have never lived before creating our own habitats for a mysterious character.

In Derwent this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we will start looking at ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ focusing on sequencing and talk for writing.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are working on any spelling misconceptions from assessment week. We will also learn about exclamation sentences.

Maths:

In maths we are looking at multiplication and division. We will also work on place value within the provision.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘How do we solve conflict?’ We will continue to observe the changes of trees as the weather changes. This will also link with our geography work on human and physical features.  In our well-being work we will work on self confidence.

In English this week we will continue with the ‘Journey’ as our main text focus. We will edit and publish our narratives.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are working on phase 6 phonics with a specific focus on tense. we will continue to work on our ‘Autumn Term’ spellings exploring the patterns in these words.

Maths:

In maths we are consolidating our work on addition and subtraction. We will also start to explore the concept of money.

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘How do we solve conflict?’ We will continue to observe the changes of trees as the weather changes. This will also link with our geography work on human and physical features.

In English this week we will start our new book ‘Journey by Aaron Becker’ The children will explore this book in reading and literacy sessions focusing on inference and imagination skills.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are working on phase 6 phonics with a specific focus on tense. we will continue to work on our ‘Autumn Term’ spellings exploring the patterns in these words.

Maths:

In maths we are focusing on addition and subtraction. We will also practise our maths basics and ten times table as part of our times tables competition.

In English this week we will start to write our instruction using our sock puppets as the theme. The children have been exploring the skills and elements to produce a great set of instructions so we will look at how we can incorporate these in our writing.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are continuing to focus on recapping phase 5 phonics patterns. Year 3s are focussing on learning to read, spell and use the common exception words for LKS2.

Maths:

In maths we are focusing on addition and subtraction. We will also practise our maths basics and ten times table as part of our times tables competition.

In English this week we will start to write our information text on Autumn. A caterpillar challenge will be in the provision as the children found one outside last week and were amazed at the fact they found one in Autumn. We will also continue to look at different sentence types as part of the genre we are exploring.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are continuing to focus on recapping phase 5 phonics patterns. Year 3s are focussing on learning to read, spell and use the common exception words for LKS2.

Maths:

In maths we are focusing on place value and gaining a deep understanding of what numbers mean. To embed this skill even more, I have some diving deeper challenges.

In Derwent this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we are continuing to learn how to write a character description based on our text ‘The Name Jar’. We will be using this as a baseline and will revisit some of the SPaG and phonic strategies to embed these in a new context.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are continuing to focus on recapping phase 5 phonics patterns. Year 3s are focussing on learning to read, spell and use the common exception words for LKS2. In our writing our grammar focus will be using adverbs of time and manner, with year 3 using these as fronted adverbials.

Maths:

In maths we are focusing on place value and gaining a deep understanding of what numbers mean. To embed this skill even more, I have created some riddles as an extra challenge in the provision.

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘How do we solve conflict?’ We are exploring the ‘Name Jar’ book as part of this. Most of our work will focus on making clay pots for Unhei.
