(Week Commencing 18th February 2019)

In Derwent this week we are learning the following:

English:

In reading this week we are starting to explore chapter 5 of The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark. We will also be writing a narrative based on the story Owl Babies.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are looking at new spelling rules (see bloomz and planners for the spellings). We will also practise these using our no-nonsense spelling strategies.

Maths:

In maths we are looking at our maths basics.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘who could survive in a Habitat like that?’ We will be looking at food chains and the importance of a balanced diet.

Literacy

Year 1: This week we are reading lots of poetry and we will be exploring the word choices as well as performing some of the poems.

Reception: This week we are reading the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  We will be re-telling the story and performing some drama.

Numeracy

Year 1: In maths we are exploring subtraction.

In Reception we are learning about Money.

Phonics

Year 1:. We are learning the split digraph e-e.

Reception: We are learning the sound oo as in book.

Spellings this week (Year 1)

Our challenges this week are about weather.  

We will also be finding out about healthy eating in Reception.

We will be reading every day in school.  Books will now be changed on a Monday.

Literacy

In Year 1 this week we are writing instructions.  We will be learning about Chinese New Year and making our own Chinese dumplings.

In Reception we will be learning about the Great race and writing our own race story.

Numeracy

In maths we are learning how to subtract using different methods.

In Reception we are learning about ordinal numbers-first, second, third etc…

Phonics

Year 1:. We are learning the split digraph a-e  Videos have been shared on Bloomz to help.

Reception: We are learning the sound oo as in moon and oo as in hoot.  Please see videos on Bloomz.

In Derwent this week we are learning the following:

English:

In reading this week we are starting to explore chapter 3 of The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark. We will also be researching different types of Owls ready to write a non-chronological report on them.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are looking at new spelling rules (see bloomz and planners for the spellings). We will also practise these using our no-nonsense spelling strategies.

Maths:

In maths we are looking at length, measure and perimeter.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘who could survive in a Habitat like that?’ We will be looking at micro and local Habitats.

In reading this week we are starting to explore chapter 2 of ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark.’ We will write, publish and edit or letters to Chrissy and Annie from the Bog Baby.

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are looking at new spelling rules (see bloomz and planners for the spellings). We will also practise these using our no-nonsense spelling strategies.

Maths:

In maths we are looking at division.  We will also be focusing on the four daily operations and maths facts.

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘who could survive in a Habitat like that?’ We will be looking at micro and local Habitats.

Happy New Year!

In Derwent this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we are starting with the book called ‘The Bog Baby’ which is great for descriptive language and looking at morals. We will also look at setting a New Year Resolution and have a discussion based on this.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are looking at prefixes and suffixes and introducing new spelling rules for this cycle. (Each year group will have their own spellings in their planners and they are on bloomz too).

Maths:

In maths we are looking at multiplication and division..

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘who could survive in a Habitat like that?’ We will start by looking at things that are alive, dead or that have never lived before creating our own habitats for a mysterious character.

In Derwent this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we will start looking at ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ focusing on sequencing and talk for writing.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are working on any spelling misconceptions from assessment week. We will also learn about exclamation sentences.

Maths:

In maths we are looking at multiplication and division. We will also work on place value within the provision.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘How do we solve conflict?’ We will continue to observe the changes of trees as the weather changes. This will also link with our geography work on human and physical features.  In our well-being work we will work on self confidence.

Literacy

This week we are writing our own dinosaur stories and learning about Diwali.  We will be also be reading the story of Rama and Sita and sequencing the story before re-telling it in our own words focussing on writing the story with a beginning, middle and end.  We are working hard to ensure our sentences have a conjunction and an adjective.

Numeracy

In maths we are learning about tens and units in numbers as well as recapping over what we have learnt about pairs of numbers which total ten.  We will be looking at fractions of shapes and objects in our maths carousel.

In Reception we are learning how to use the part part whole method to help us find the total of two numbers as well as looking at patterns linked to our Diwali celebrations.

Phonics

This week we are learning uor split digraphs: a-e, e-e, o-e, u-e and i-e.

Year 1:. We will also be practising spelling our common exception words.

Reception: We are learning the first set of sounds in phase 3 this week, they are j, v, w and x.  We are really trying hard to segment words which will help us with reading new words and spelling.

In Humber this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week, we are continuing with our class novel – War Horse. We will also be finishing our non-chronological reports about the Christmas Truce. Do pop in and have a look at these once they are finished; they are looking brilliant!

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are focussing using colons and semicolons to include multi-clause sentences in our writing.

Maths:

In maths, we are working on ordering and comparing fractions, using equivalent fractions and multiplying and dividing methods to help.

Maths Basics:

Maths basics  are key skills/facts children need to know.  In maths basics this week we are focusing on decimal – fraction – percentage equivalents. Test your child to see how many they know!

Creative Curriculum:

In creative curriculum this week we are focussing on Science, and using dataloggers to conduct different experiments. Continuing with our topic of light, we will be looking at which materials reflect the most light.

Homework:

Homework is set every night.  From Monday to Thursday children will have:

• A short maths sheet (between 4 and 6 questions).
• Reading for 10 minutes (+ one more reading over the weekend)

Every week the children have a comprehension task to complete in their CGP book. This is due in every Monday, so they have a week to complete it.

Spellings are learnt in class but if you could help with practising at home, this would be brilliant. This week, the children are practising the spellings they didn’t get right in our test of all the words they have learnt so far this term.

Knowing times tables and number bond (pairs of numbers to 10/20 and beyond) well helps children make massive progress in maths so any help you can give your child will be great.  Your child has a Number Gym log in and password in their planners and if they could go on Number Gym at home, even for 5 minutes, it will really help them have a secure knowledge and faster recall of times tables and number facts.

Literacy

We found out lots of facts about dinosaurs before the holidays and now we are ready to start planning our own dinosaur adventure story this week.

We will also be learning about Bonfire Night and the Gunpowder Plot as well as Remembrance Day.

Numeracy

In maths we are learning about the position of numbers to 20 this week looking at where they sit on a number line and the value of the tens and ones in a two digit number.  We are also learning to count in 10’s.

In Reception we are learning all about number 10 and how it is made up.  We will be looking at pairs of ten and we will also be exploring one more and less than with numbers up to 10.

Phonics

Our phonic sounds this week which we are focusing on using in our writing are…

Year 1:. This week we are focusing on consonant blends and clusters for example, scr, sk, lk, lp

Reception: We are learning the final set of sounds this week in phase 2: f, l, ff, ll and ss  we will be learning how to read these in words.
