Foss What’s Happening This Week

(Week Commencing 22nd October 2018)

In Foss this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we are continuing with our three week narrative unit. We are still working on our guided write which we will complete by the end of the week. Next week we will write an independent narrative. We will be continuing to explore the historical context of our story (The Blitz) in line with our creative curriculum. We will be working on our editing skills too so we can make our narratives the best they possibly can be.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spellings, we are continuing to look at homophones. (Words that sound the same, but are spelt differently and mean something different).

Maths:

We are continuing with learning about using the inverse and estimation to check our answers and will move into length and perimeter in year 4 and statistics in year 5 towards the end of the week.

Times tables focus for the week: 7s

(This will be the focus for the maths homework activities sent home the previous Monday for children to practice ready for the times tables check on the following Monday).

Maths Basics:

Our maths basics focus this week in year 5 is continuing to look at counting forwards and backwards in various jumps. In year 4 we will be revisiting our rounding skills, going over rounding to the nearest 100 and 1000 in particular.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘How do we solve conflict?’ Looking particularly closely at World War II. We are continuing to focus on the Home Front – looking at the Blitz, propaganda, rationing and women’s role in the war. We will be looking at sound and how we hear.

Homework:

Homework this year includes:

Reading 5 times a week

A reading Tic Tac Toe challenge activity – each time you read, complete one of the activities/answer one of the questions and sign off on the sheet to say it is complete (we have provided a book in case it is a written activity). For every 4 activities completed in a row, your child will receive 5 gems.

A times tables practice pack – a range of activities for your child to use to practice this week’s times tables.

Spellings are learnt in class but if you could help with practising at home, this would be brilliant.

Spellings we are focusing on in class this week are below. Year 4 are continuing to look at homophones, correctly being able to spell them but also recognise which needs to be used when. Year 5 are looking at words ending in ‘ible’ and ‘able’

disposable

scene

seen

valuable

enjoyable

Knowing times tables and number bonds well helps children make massive progress in maths so any help you can give your child will be great. Your child has a Number Gym login and password, if they could go on Number Gym at home, even for 5 minutes a day, it will really help them have a secure knowledge and faster recall of times tables and number facts. Children also have a Times Tables Rockstars log in to help them practice their times tables in a different way.

(Week Commencing 24th September 2018)

In Foss this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we are writing our independent letters from the perspective of an evacuee child to their loved ones back at home. Describing the journey (including the hustle and bustle at the train station and the train ride), their new guardians and the picking process and finally their new home (describing it and the rules they have to follow). We will be building on our learning from last week to write these informal letters, including writing in the first person, in past tense, using embedded clauses and using informal language features like question tags and contractions.

SPaG/Phonics:

Our spelling focus this week is a mixture of the common exception words for Y3/4 for the Year 4s and Y5/6 words for the Year 5s (see below for the words).

We are continuing to focus on words with silent letters (Year 5) and words using the apostrophe to show possession (Year 4), including when singular nouns end in an s – eg. Jess’ pencil case.

Maths:

We are exploring numbers to 1 million in Year 5 – comparing and ordering, counting in 10s, 100s, 1000s, 10,000s and 100,000s (powers of ten), partitioning and representing numbers in different ways and negative numbers.

In year 4 we are looking at representing numbers on a number line, counting in 25s, partitioning numbers in different ways and negative numbers.

Times tables focus for the week: 3s, 4s and 8s mixed. (This will be the focus for the maths homework activities sent home the previous Friday for children to practice ready for the times tables check on the following Friday).

Maths Basics:

Our maths basics focus this week is rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 in 3,4,5 and 6 digit numbers.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘How do we solve conflict?’ Looking particularly closely at World War II. For the next two weeks we will be learning more about the causes of the war, the duration of the war, what it was like for evacuees and where the conflict took place.

Homework:

Homework this year includes:

Reading 5 times a week

A reading Tic Tac Toe challenge activity – each time you read, complete one of the activities/answer one of the questions and sign off on the sheet to say it is complete (we have provided a book in case it is a written activity).

Foss What’s Happening This Week

(Week Commencing 17th September 2018)

In Derwent this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we are starting to write a letter from an evacuee child to their loved ones back at home. Describing the journey (including the hustle and bustle at the train station and the train ride), their new guardians and the picking process and finally their new home (describing it and the rules they have to follow). This will be a two week writing unit (wk bg 17th and wk bg 24th September).

SPaG/Phonics:

Our spelling focus this week is a mixture of the common exception words for Y3/4 for the Year 4s and Y5/6 words for the Year 5s (see below for the words), as well as months of the year.

We are also focussing on words with silent letters (Year 5) and words using the apostrophe to show possession (Year 4), including when singular nouns end in an s – eg. Jess’ pencil case. We will be recapping our phonics gaps each day at the start of each lesson.

Our sentence type focuses for the week are – embedded clause sentences (eg. The professor, who was extremely old, had to use a walking stick to help him get around.), using question tags for informality and using sentences of 3 for description and action.

Maths:

We are exploring numbers to 100,000. We will be learning to read, write and represent numbers to 100,000 as well as looking at ordering and comparing numbers to 100,000 and partitioning them in different ways.

Times tables focus for the week: 2s, 5s and 10s mixed. (This will be the focus for the maths homework activities sent home the previous Friday for children to practice ready for the times tables check on the following Friday).

Maths Basics:

Our maths basics focus this week is recapping Roman Numerals to 100 (Y4) and 1000 (Y5), and closely linked to our maths lessons we will be looking at identifying place value in numbers to 10,000 (Y4) and 100,000 (Y5).

Year 4

Year 5

April

May

June

May

June

Knowing times tables and number bonds well helps children make massive progress in maths so any help you can give your child will be great. Your child has a Number Gym login and password, if they could go on Number Gym at home, even for 5 minutes a day, it will really help them have a secure knowledge and faster recall of times tables and number facts.
It is assessment week this week so we are going to be completing our instruction writing and using the limiting judgements as our success criteria then I have set the children a challenge to independently write a narrative so I can see exactly what the children can do to inform my teacher assessments.

This week is all about closing any gaps that we have spotted in our phonics as it is assessment week. We will also be assessing the children to see what progress the children have made.

Knowing times tables and number bonds (pairs of numbers to 10/20 and beyond) well helps children make massive progress in maths so any help you can give your child will be great. Your child has a Number Gym login and password in their planners and if they could go on Number Gym at home, even for 5 minutes, it will really help them have a secure knowledge and faster recall of times tables and number facts.
