Welcome to Team Otters

Year 1 and 2

Who works in our team?

Our class teacher is Mrs Bullock and our Assistant Teachers are Mrs Wright and Mrs Sanderson.

What happens when?

We have PE on a Monday with Mr Jeff and with Mrs Bullock on a Friday. Children bring in their PE kits on Monday and leave them at school for the rest of the half term.

We have different lessons on different days during the week. Every day we have maths and English lessons as well as daily phonics following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme. In addition to this,  we have a Science lesson weekly, and Music with Mrs Oldfield.

Our Wider Curriculum lessons cover History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, PSHE and Computing, and much of this is learnt through provision in the classroom.

We record lots of our learning on Twitter. Please follow to see all the exciting things we get up to on the school’s Twitter account (@CamblesSchool).

Reading

In Year 1, children have three reading practice sessions a week, following the format of decoding, prosody and comprehension as well as completing independent tasks using skills of inference, prediction, retrieval, vocabulary and sequencing depending on their age.

After the children have read their reading books in school, these are given to the children to take home and practise. Children should be able to independently access these texts, developing their fluency. In addition to this, children will take home a ‘sharing book’ which is not matched to their phonic level and is intended to be shared with an adult, rather than read independently. Both of these books are changed once a week.

Part-way through Year 2, when children are ready, they will move onto more of a whole class guided reading approach using the same phonics provider and the frequency and variety of books sent home may change.

Homework

To read to an adult five times a week. Please could you record in your child’s reading record when they have read with an adult: three times a week, this should be their Little Wandle book.  Weekly spellings are also sent home on a Monday afternoon and tested on the following Monday morning. These spellings will be in your child’s planner as well as sent via the weekly update on ParentHub.

Year 2 may, on occasion, be given a maths challenge in addition to this.

If you have any questions about what is happening in class, a member of staff will be on the door in the morning or available to arrange a suitable time to discuss.
