Welcome to Team Otters

Year 1 and 2

Who works in our team?

Our class teacher is Miss Housley and our Assistant Teacher is Mrs Wright.

What happens when?

We have PE on a Monday with Mr Jeff. Children bring in their PE kits on Monday and leave them at school for the rest of the week.

We have different lessons on different days during the week. Every day we have maths and literacy lessons as well as daily phonics following the Little Wandle phonics programme. In addition to this we have a Science lesson weekly, French with Mrs Ruddle and Music with Mrs Oldfield.

Our Wider Curriculum lessons cover History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, PSHE and Computing, and much of this is learnt through provision in the classroom.

In the Autumn term, we also have Forest Schools on a Friday afternoon with Mr Card.

We record lots of our learning on Twitter. Please follow to see all the exciting things we get up to on the school’s Twitter account (@CamblesSchool).

Reading

Children have three guided reading sessions a week, following the format of decoding, prosody and comprehension as well as completing independent tasks using skills of inference, prediction, retrieval, vocabulary and sequencing.

Children are given reading practice books to take home after they have been read in school which children should be able to access independently developing fluency. In addition to this, children will take home a ‘sharing book’ which is not matched to their phonic level and is intended to be shared with an adult, rather than read independently. Both of these books are changed once a week.

Homework

To read to an adult 5 times a week. Please could you record in your child’s reading record if they have read with an adult. Reading five times a week at home earns the children an extra 15 minutes playtime on a Friday.

Weekly spellings are also sent home on a Monday afternoon and tested on the following Monday morning. Spellings are set on a Monday and will be in your child’s planner as well as sent via the weekly update on ParentHub.

If you have any questions about what is happening in class, a member of staff will be on the door in the morning or available to arrange a suitable time to discuss.
