Welcome to Team Otters

Year 1 and 2

Who works in our team?

Our class teacher is Mrs Bullock and our Assistant Teacher is Mrs Parsonage.

What happens when?

We have PE on a  Friday with Mrs Bullock and we will be doing Forest Schools on a Wednesday afternoon with Mr Card.

Children should bring their PE kit on a Monday and leave it in school all week.

For Forest School children will need wellies and a weather appropriate coat. We have water-proof trousers in school for them to wear.

We have different lessons on different days during the week. Every day apart from Wednesday, we have Maths and English lessons as well as daily phonics following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme. In addition to this we have Music with Mrs Oldfield and PSHE or RE with Mrs Cawthorn every week and we have a weekly Science lesson.

Our Wider Curriculum lessons cover History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, PSHE and Computing, and much of this is learnt through provision in the classroom.

We record lots of our learning on Twitter. Please follow to see all the exciting things we get up to on the school’s Twitter account (@CamblesSchool).

Reading

In Year 1 and 2, children have three reading practice sessions a week, following the format of decoding, prosody and comprehension as well as completing independent tasks using skills of inference, prediction, retrieval, vocabulary and sequencing depending on their age.

After the children have read their reading books in school, these are given to the children to take home and practise. The first Little Wandle books will go home by the end of next week. Children will also take home a ‘sharing book’ which is not matched to their phonic level to share with an adult at home. These will be changed once a week on a Wednesday.

Part-way through Year 2, when children are ready, they will move onto Little Wandle Bridge to spellings.Year 2 children also have 2 guided reading lessons per week, which will increase as we move through the school year.

Homework

To read to an adult five times a week. Please could you record in your child’s reading record when they have read with an adult: three times a week, this should be their Little Wandle book.  We have made the decision to not send spellings home with Team Otters until they begin Bridge to spellings in January for the Year 2 children.

If you have any questions about what is happening in class, a member of staff will be on the door in the morning or available to arrange a suitable time to discuss.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs Bullock
