Foss Class What’s Happening This Week Commencing 24th September 2018

Foss What’s Happening This Week

(Week Commencing 24th September 2018)

In Foss this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we are writing our independent letters from the perspective of an evacuee child to their loved ones back at home. Describing the journey (including the hustle and bustle at the train station and the train ride), their new guardians and the picking process and finally their new home (describing it and the rules they have to follow). We will be building on our learning from last week to write these informal letters, including writing in the first person, in past tense, using embedded clauses and using informal language features like question tags and contractions.

SPaG/Phonics:

Our spelling focus this week is a mixture of the common exception words for Y3/4 for the Year 4s and Y5/6 words for the Year 5s (see below for the words).

We are continuing to focus on words with silent letters (Year 5) and words using the apostrophe to show possession (Year 4), including when singular nouns end in an s – eg. Jess’ pencil case.

Maths:

We are exploring numbers to 1 million in Year 5 – comparing and ordering, counting in 10s, 100s, 1000s, 10,000s and 100,000s (powers of ten), partitioning and representing numbers in different ways and negative numbers.

In year 4 we are looking at representing numbers on a number line, counting in 25s, partitioning numbers in different ways and negative numbers.

Times tables focus for the week: 3s, 4s and 8s mixed. (This will be the focus for the maths homework activities sent home the previous Friday for children to practice ready for the times tables check on the following Friday).

Maths Basics:

Our maths basics focus this week is rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 in 3,4,5 and 6 digit numbers.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘How do we solve conflict?’ Looking particularly closely at World War II. For the next two weeks we will be learning more about the causes of the war, the duration of the war, what it was like for evacuees and where the conflict took place.

Homework:

Homework this year includes:

  • Reading 5 times a week
  • A reading Tic Tac Toe challenge activity – each time you read, complete one of the activities/answer one of the questions and sign off on the sheet to say it is complete (we have provided a book in case it is a written activity). For every 4 activities completed in a row, your child will receive 5 gems.
  • A times tables practice pack – a range of activities for your child to use to practice this week’s times tables.

Spellings are learnt in class but if you could help with practising at home, this would be brilliant.

Spellings we are focusing on in class this week are below.

Year 4 Year 5
interest island knowledge island
knowledge length accommodate solemn
library material according knickers
medicine learn accompany numb

Knowing times tables and number bonds well helps children make massive progress in maths so any help you can give your child will be great.  Your child has a Number Gym login and password, if they could go on Number Gym at home, even for 5 minutes a day, it will really help them have a secure knowledge and faster recall of times tables and number facts. Children also have a Times Tables Rockstars log in to help them practice their times tables in a different way.
