Derwent Class What’s Happening This Week Commencing 14th May 2018

Derwent What’s Happening This Week

(Week Commencing 14th May 2018)

In Derwent this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we are continuing to learn how to write a detailed set of instructions using imperative verbs and adverbs of time and manner. Last week we made a healthy drink and wrote instructions on how we did it, this week we are creating a healthy snack to write instructions about.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spelling, punctuation and grammar we are continuing to focus on recapping phase 5 phonics patterns a, as well as continuing to look at phase 6 sounds. Year 3s are focussing on learning to read, spell and use the common exception words for LKS2. In our writing our grammar focus will be using adverbs of time and manner, with year 3 using these as fronted adverbials.

Maths:

In maths in year 2 we are recapping all of our learning so far, focussing this week on fractions, shape and time as well as developing our arithmetic fluency skills.  In year 3 we are finishing off learning about equivalent fractions and consolidating our knowledge on time – moving on to learning how to tell the time to 5 minute and 1 minute intervals.

Maths Basics:

Maths basics  are key skills/facts children need to know. In maths basics this week we are continuing to focus on the 2,5 and 10 times tables in year 2 and the 4 and 8 times tables for year 3. We are continuing to focus on our mental arithmetic skills, looking at the 4 operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing). We are also recapping odd and even numbers as we are finding these tricky.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘How does the planet look after us?’ We are exploring what the planet provides us (eg. plants to eat – which we are looking at during our visits to Stockbridge, as well as what else the planet provides us). This will be ongoing until the end of our current cycle.

Homework:

Homework is set every night.  From Monday to Thursday children will have:

  • Some short maths questions or a maths problem solving challenge
  • 2 sentences to write using their spellings
  • reading (+ one more reading over the weekend)

Spellings are learnt in class but if you could help with practising at home, this would be brilliant.

Spellings we are focusing on in class this week are below.

Y2 words

want squash
watch quantity
wander quality
wallet quarrel

Y3 words

automatic superman
autograph superstar
superior autopilot
superficial autobiography

Knowing times tables and number bond (pairs of numbers to 10/20 and beyond) well helps children make massive progress in maths so any help you can give your child will be great.  Your child has a Number Gym login and password in their planners and if they could go on Number Gym at home, even for 5 minutes, it will really help them have a secure knowledge and faster recall of times tables and number facts.

Children also have a Times Tables Rockstars log in to help them practice their times tables in a different way.
