Foss Class What’s Happening This Week Commencing 15th October 2018

Foss What’s Happening This Week

(Week Commencing 15th October 2018)

In Foss this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we will be starting a three week narrative unit. We will work on a guided write for two weeks and then in the third week we will write an independent narrative. We will be exploring this week the historical context of our story (The Blitz) in line with our creative curriculum. We will also be developing the skills required for writing a narrative and generating some great vocabulary to use.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spellings, we are continuing to look at homophones. (Words that sound the same, but are spelt differently and mean something different).

Maths:

We are going to learn how to solve column subtraction questions involving 4 digits and more. We will use resources to help us initially and then move into formal written method of column subtraction. We will also look into using the inverse and using estimation and approximation to check our answers.

Times tables focus for the week: 6s mixed order

(This will be the focus for the maths homework activities sent home the previous Monday for children to practice ready for the times tables check on the following Monday).

Maths Basics:

Our maths basics focus this week is continuing to look at counting forwards and backwards in various jumps. As well as completing some HAGs based on our learning of addition.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘How do we solve conflict?’ Looking particularly closely at World War II. For the next three weeks we will be focussing on the Home Front – looking at the Blitz, propaganda, rationing and women’s role in the war. We will be looking at sound and how we hear.

Homework:

Homework this year includes:

  • Reading 5 times a week
  • A reading Tic Tac Toe challenge activity – each time you read, complete one of the activities/answer one of the questions and sign off on the sheet to say it is complete (we have provided a book in case it is a written activity). For every 4 activities completed in a row, your child will receive 5 gems.
  • A times tables practice pack – a range of activities for your child to use to practice this week’s times tables.

Spellings are learnt in class but if you could help with practising at home, this would be brilliant.

Spellings we are focusing on in class this week are below. They are the same as last week with the residential taking place to allow the children time to practice them in school and at home.

Year 4 Year 5
not knot stationary stationery
great grate weary wary
weather whether desert dessert
accept except draft fraught

Knowing times tables and number bonds well helps children make massive progress in maths so any help you can give your child will be great.  Your child has a Number Gym login and password, if they could go on Number Gym at home, even for 5 minutes a day, it will really help them have a secure knowledge and faster recall of times tables and number facts. Children also have a Times Tables Rockstars log in to help them practice their times tables in a different way.
