Foss Class What’s Happening This Week Commencing 8th October 2018

Foss What’s Happening This Week

(Week Commencing 8th October 2018)

In Foss this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we will be focusing on non-chronological reports (writing information leaflets/posters/texts about Kingswood) and we will also be focusing on instruction writing. Thinking closely about using fronted adverbials, modal verbs, commas in a list (including sentences of three for action) as well as recapping prior learning such as using embedded clauses, adjectives and adjective starter sentences.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spellings, we are continuing to look at homophones. (Words that sound the same, but are spelt differently and mean something different).

Maths:

We are continuing to learn how to solve column addition questions involving 4 digits and more. We will use resources to help us with this initially then move into mental methods and then the formal written method of column addition.

Times tables focus for the week: 6s.

(This will be the focus for the maths homework activities sent home the previous Friday for children to practice ready for the times tables check on the following Friday).

Maths Basics:

Our maths basics focus this week is continuing to look at counting forwards and backwards in various jumps (eg, 6, 7, 8, 20) as well as recapping rounding to the nearest 100, 1000 and in year five to the nearest 10,000 and 100,000 with numbers up to 1 million.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘How do we solve conflict?’ Looking particularly closely at World War II. For the next three weeks we will be focussing on the Home Front – looking at the Blitz, propaganda, rationing and women’s role in the war. We will be looking at sound and how we hear.

Homework:

Homework this year includes:

  • Reading 5 times a week
  • A reading Tic Tac Toe challenge activity – each time you read, complete one of the activities/answer one of the questions and sign off on the sheet to say it is complete (we have provided a book in case it is a written activity). For every 4 activities completed in a row, your child will receive 5 gems.
  • A times tables practice pack – a range of activities for your child to use to practice this week’s times tables.

Spellings are learnt in class but if you could help with practising at home, this would be brilliant.

Spellings we are focusing on in class this week are below. They are the same as last week with the residential taking place to allow the children time to practice them in school and at home.

Year 4 Year 5

main mane aloud allowed

witch which heard herd

Knowing times tables and number bonds well helps children make massive progress in maths so any help you can give your child will be great.  Your child has a Number Gym login and password, if they could go on Number Gym at home, even for 5 minutes a day, it will really help them have a secure knowledge and faster recall of times tables and number facts. Children also have a Times Tables Rockstars log in to help them practice their times tables in a different way.
