Foss Class What’s Happening This Week Commencing 22nd October 2018

Foss What’s Happening This Week

(Week Commencing 22nd October 2018)

In Foss this week we are learning the following:

English:

In English this week we are continuing with our three week narrative unit. We are still working on our guided write which we will complete by the end of the week. Next week we will write an independent narrative. We will be continuing to explore the historical context of our story (The Blitz) in line with our creative curriculum. We will be working on our editing skills too so we can make our narratives the best they possibly can be.

SPaG/Phonics:

In spellings, we are continuing to look at homophones. (Words that sound the same, but are spelt differently and mean something different).

Maths:

We are continuing with learning about using the inverse and estimation to check our answers and will move into length and perimeter in year 4 and statistics in year 5 towards the end of the week.

Times tables focus for the week: 7s

(This will be the focus for the maths homework activities sent home the previous Monday for children to practice ready for the times tables check on the following Monday).

Maths Basics:

Our maths basics focus this week in year 5 is continuing to look at counting forwards and backwards in various jumps. In year 4 we will be revisiting our rounding skills, going over rounding to the nearest 100 and 1000 in particular.

Creative Curriculum:

We work on a theme every term and this term our key question is ‘How do we solve conflict?’ Looking particularly closely at World War II. We are continuing to focus on the Home Front – looking at the Blitz, propaganda, rationing and women’s role in the war. We will be looking at sound and how we hear.

Homework:

Homework this year includes:

  • Reading 5 times a week
  • A reading Tic Tac Toe challenge activity – each time you read, complete one of the activities/answer one of the questions and sign off on the sheet to say it is complete (we have provided a book in case it is a written activity). For every 4 activities completed in a row, your child will receive 5 gems.
  • A times tables practice pack – a range of activities for your child to use to practice this week’s times tables.

Spellings are learnt in class but if you could help with practising at home, this would be brilliant.

Spellings we are focusing on in class this week are below. Year 4 are continuing to look at homophones, correctly being able to spell them but also recognise which needs to be used when. Year 5 are looking at words ending in ‘ible’ and ‘able’

Year 4 Year 5
missed mist terrible horrible
mail male invincible possible
rain reign adorable disposable
scene seen valuable enjoyable

Knowing times tables and number bonds well helps children make massive progress in maths so any help you can give your child will be great.  Your child has a Number Gym login and password, if they could go on Number Gym at home, even for 5 minutes a day, it will really help them have a secure knowledge and faster recall of times tables and number facts. Children also have a Times Tables Rockstars log in to help them practice their times tables in a different way.
